Center Valley, Pa. - Navy's Madeline Boe earned Patriot League Women's Rowing Scholar-Athlete of the Year recognition and was one of 77 student-athletes named to the 2006 academic honor roll, announced Executive Director Carolyn Schlie Femovich Wednesday. In addition, four members of the academic honor roll posted at least a 4.00 grade-point average during the spring semester.
Boe sports a 3.78 cumulative grade-point average as an honors oceanography major and was an ESPN The Magazine Academic At-Large All-District Team selection. She was also named a Trident Scholar by the Naval Academy, which is a program that only accepts applicants from the top 10% of the class and provides the opportunity for selected Mids to work on a 12-month independent research project.
This season, Boe competed in Navy's second-varsity boat that posted a regular-season record of 17-2 and won its event at the Patriot League Championship. Her boat also reached the grand final at the Eastern Sprints Championship, the first varsity-eight boat in Navy history (11 years) to advance to a grand final at the event.
A Navy student-athlete has been honored with the Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year award in each year the sport has been sponsored. Boe joins former teammate Shaunnah Wark as the other recipient.
The four student-athletes on this year's list to earn a 4.00 or better grade-point average during the spring semester were Colgate's Jane Hornickel and Navy's Fiona McFarland, Catherine Ortman and Kerry Hannon.
To be eligible for the Academic Honor Roll, a student-athlete must earn a 3.20 grade-point average in the spring semester and be awarded a varsity letter in one of the Patriot League's six winter or 10 spring championship sports.
A total of 974 student-athletes were named to the Patriot League's Winter/Spring Academic Honor Roll, which includes the sports of men and women's basketball, men and women's swimming and diving, men and women's indoor track and field, baseball, golf, men and women's lacrosse, rowing, men and women's outdoor track and field, softball and men and women's tennis.
